Autumn Meteorite has commissioned a new work by this up-and-coming “wide-angle lens theater” company. In this piece, the textures of our lives are projected onto a theatrical space that exposes its stage mechanisms.

Established in 2019, SEKITA IKUKO is a theater unit led by Ikuko Sekita. Guided by their philosophy of “wide-angle lens theater,” the unit treats every element within the theatrical space—walls, floors, performers’ bodies—with equal weight. This methodology invites audiences to experience new perspectives and altered senses of distance. A defining trait of the unit is that members come together as independent individuals, with an emphasis on active, interdisciplinary participation from everyone in all aspects of the creative process. The Performing Arts Festival: Autumn Meteorite 2025 Tokyo has selected SEKITA IKUKO as its first commissioned artist.

We believe their distinctive creative methodology will offer audiences fresh perspectives and unfamiliar sensations.

The work’s title contains two meanings: the literal one of “undertaking,” and the other of “revealing hidden places, such as the space under the floor in a theater.”

In making this new work, we held an open call for performers and creative collaborators eager to explore new spatial perspectives and physical expressions, with the aim of examining the elements required to create a theatrical work within this space. As a result, two new members were selected to join the process.

Profile

The logo mark of the theatrical unit SEKITA IKUKO led by Ikuko Sekita. The design features the kanji characters for "SEKITA IKUKO" drawn in black lines on a white background, stylized with combinations of circles, lines, and symbols. At the bottom, the English transcription "SEKITA IKUKO" is included.

SEKITA IKUKO

Established in 2019 as theatrical unit SEKITA IKUKO.
The unit advocates what it calls “theater through a wide-angle lens”in which the actors’ bodies and the walls and floor of the theater have equal value for the audience, creating theatrical works as the practice of this philosophy. Proposed a new concept, “Vibes Theatre,” in October 2025.
In 2023, “micro wave” won both the Grand Prize and Audience Award at the Kanagawa Short Drama Award 2023.

What is “Vibes Theatre”?

Everything that exists around us is composed of invisible “vibrations.”

In modern physics, ‘Superstring Theory’ explains that these “vibrations” determine the very nature of all substances.

For example, an actor's body exists on stage as a single “vibration.” The actor's performance amplifies or dampens this “vibration”, spreading it throughout the entire theatre. This wave also interacts with the subtle “vibrations” latent within the audience who share the same space.

As the audience experiences what is happening on stage through this sensation,  there comes a moment when they begin to ‘understand’ the events unfolding in front of them. At this instant, the “vibrations” of the sender and the receiver align.

By reframing events through this “vibration”, a new way of understanding the world may emerge.

Even if one cannot distinctly feel their own “vibration”, being in a theatrical space with the others allows one to encounter the “vibrations” of those around them.
The experience of riding the wave of theatre —or choosing not to ride it— amidst the disorderly spread of vibrations within the space is what we call “Vibes Theatre.”
