Utau-Hahagokoro "The Theater☆Sing! Dance! Grow! A garden of Hahagokoro ~Children's Clothing is Reincarnation~"
Updates
Utau-Hahagokoro’s actress-mothers turn daily life into theater, singing of the sorrow and reality of being both mothers and performers. Through children’s hand-me-downs, theater becomes something more shareable.
Utau-Hahagokoro was formed in 2017 by actresses who have become mothers. While changing their children’s diapers, they found themselves spontaneously humming original songs. Taking this soliloquy-like exercise as a starting point, tunes related to various stages in parenting—from postpartum euphoria and the “terrible twos” to the first signs of selfhood—are turned into a mothers’ choral theater, the different realities of the singers and listeners finding common ground.
Hand-me-downs serve as children’s entrance tickets; the clothes that are brought to the venue will be available for other parents and children to take home. This flea market area thus becomes a space to share the cyclical and everchanging nature of parenting through these hand-me-downs.
This piece for Autumn Meteorite marks the group’s first theatrical performance. As performers reconsidering their relationship to theater in motherhood, they have pursued an inclusive creation environment that allows children and adults to spend time together, whether during rehearsals or performances. The children of the performers and audience members cry, scream, and run; the theater brews chaos as the women’s self-conscious feelings also intermix. All of this constitutes theater, and this theater in turn constitutes these women’s everyday lives.

Profile
Utau-Hahagokoro
Utau-Hahagokoro is a chorus-theater ensemble founded by actresses who became mothers and sought to transform the perplexing realities of motherhood into theatrical expression. They shape the love, sorrow, aspirations, and fatigue of parenting into an "ode to loving child-rearing," through a unique performance in the style of a mom's chorus recital. Rehearsals and performances are held with children present; the sounds of crying, shouting, running, and climbing are welcomed as part of the performance itself.

Playwright, Director: Asako Kikukawa
Born in Tottori Prefecture, Asako Kikukawa began her acting career in 2000. While performing with various theater companies—including Kobayashi Hiroshi Productions, GOTANNDADAN, and hi-bye—she began writing, directing, composing, and choreographing in 2004. Driven by a critical awareness of how women are represented in theater, she established the theater unit Hula‑Hooper in 2002, aiming for a more authentic portrayal of women. She also created "Club Activities: TARA.," a hybrid of music and drama performed in live-house venues, continuously challenging conventional frameworks to produce novel stage expressions.
After giving birth in 2016, she continued both performing and directing alongside her child. In 2017, she founded Utau‑Hahagokoro, gathering like-minded mother-actors to confront the complexities of combining motherhood with theater. Based in Tottori Prefecture, she travels nationwide to create with her child.
