A brilliant microcosm of puppet theater crafted from fragments of objects. This acclaimed work from the Czech alternative theater scene makes its long-awaited Japan debut!
Hand Gote Research & Development is a leading company within the contemporary alternative theater scene in Czechia. Since its founding in 2005, the group has created over 50 works that explore the boundaries between theater, contemporary dance, visual arts, music, performance, and conceptual art. They continue to present stage works using various objects that range from natural materials to industrial machinery.
Premiering in 2023, “The Third Hand Třetí Ruka” is their second performance revisiting the field of puppet theater and attempting to revive the genre’s experimental developments of the 1990s.
By revealing the individual histories of various objects, the piece creates countless moments that recompose their narratives and social significance. Regarded as the company’s masterpiece, the performance shows fragments of stories, situations, and images to construct a microcosm of puppet theater that is accessible through multiple perspectives, leaving the interpretation to the audience.
After the performance, audience members are invited backstage to observe each of the enigmatic objects up close and take photos.
