Passing of Robert Wilson, Director, Scenic and Lighting Designer of TMT Autumn Selection "Mary Said What She Said"

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Robert Wilson, a towering figure in contemporary performing arts worldwide, on July 31. He was 83 years old.
Wilson's groundbreaking works—including Einstein on the Beach—have been performed in Japan and have consistently left a profound impact on audiences and artists alike.

As part of TMT Autumn Selection and Performing Arts Festival: Autumn Meteorite 2025 Tokyo, we are honored to present Mary Said What She Said, directed by Wilson, this October in Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. This Japanese premiere came to fruition thanks to Wilson’s strong desire to collaborate with Japan once again, which he expressed during his 2023 visit to receive the Praemium Imperiale. He had intended to return to Japan for the performance. It is with deep regret that this reunion can no longer take place.

We mourn the loss of a luminous star and offer our sincere condolences.

The performances will proceed as scheduled. We have received a message from Théâtre de la Ville de Paris, the producing organization, affirming their commitment to realizing the Japan tour in accordance with Wilson’s wishes. The company members will visit Japan with his spirit in their hearts.
