Performing Arts Festival: Autumn Meteorite Tokyo

Autumn Meteorite Tokyo is a festival centered around the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro, Toshima-city. As one of the main programs of Tokyo Festival 2026, which is a comprehensive urban performing arts festival held across Tokyo, Autumn Meteorite is guided by three missions: “To create new artistic work,” “To promote international exchange,” and “To develop the next generation of performing arts professionals.” In addition to presenting various works of performing arts from both Japan and overseas, the festival aims to promote international exchange in arts and culture by implementing programs that nurture globally active performing arts professionals and foster worldwide networking across borders. Accessibility initiatives will also be actively pursued. The festival’s Artistic Director is playwright and novelist Toshiki Okada, who has also taken up the position of Artistic Director, Performing Arts of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre this fiscal year 2026. Okada is highly acclaimed both domestically and internationally for his unique methodology exploring the relationship between language and the body as well as for his sharp insight into contemporary society. Under his direction, Autumn Meteorite will expand and deepen its global connections as it continues to evolve as a festival characterized by innovation, originality, creativity, and internationalism.

Program

For its second edition, Autumn Meteorite Tokyo once again returns under the artistic direction of Toshiki Okada with three main categories: the “Performance Program,” comprising 13 diverse works of performing art from Japan and abroad; the “Non-Performance Program,” consisting of lectures, workshops, and other events; and the “Hello and Welcome (Attendee Support)” program, which provides support throughout the festival. In addition to presenting cutting-edge works from Japan and overseas, we aim to support the discovery of artists in Japan, commission new works, and foster transnational networks among artists and presenters based in Asia. Following last year’s edition, we aim to create opportunities for audiences to experience the “here and now” of the Japanese and global performing arts scenes through a diverse range of programs—making them more accessible, encouraging direct, personal connection and resonance, inviting discoveries of various realities, and opening new perspectives from which to reconsider the world we inhabit.
